Civil Rights Museum Opening footage SOON!
Mrs. Myrlie Evers-Williams gave a thought-provoking and passionate speech, looking both to the past and to the future, at the opening of the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum - the very first state sponsored civil rights museum in the nation. Given what she has lived through, she is the most gracious woman I have ever met. Mrs. Evers-Williams, at almost 85, is an articulate, tireless advocate for equality, justice and love. Her power in speaking is matched by her generous heart.
Gov. William Winter speaking at the opening ceremony of the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum. Gov. Winter is the beloved "Education Governor." His life's work has been a passion for education for Mississippi children. He is a hero of mine. The soon-to-be 95 year old is a powerhouse and is well known for bringing all people together. What a legacy!
A fresh look at race relations in the Deep South
That is my mother, Annie Lois Sims Williams Harrell on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi when we were on a vacation there in the 1950s. The child is not me, and I do not know the African-American woman with her, but in looking through our family photos, I think this one seems to capture the era best.
