The Centre for Intercultural Communication (CIC) at The University of British Columbia recognizes that understanding and respect between cultures is the key to success in the global arena.

On May 3rd, I spoke at the Univ. of B.C. Intercultural Studies Spring Institute.  The topic was "Coming to Understand White Privilege: A Documentary".  After a few introductory comments, we screened Mississippi ReMixed.  Those in attendance were students, professors, teachers and professionals from government and non-profits agencies.  23 out of 26 respondents said they could foresee using the film in their work setting.  Here are some of their comments about Mississippi ReMixed:

    * Honest and powerful

    * Willingness to face one's own wrongs and past misconceptions is rare and valuable.

    * Uplifting

    * Powerful - explorations of coming together from the inside out

    * Enlightening, eye-opening, confronting, truth laid bare, bringing our ignorance to the surface

    * Courageous

    * Magnificent, honest and simple

    * Eye opening, thought provoking - very important!

    * Brings a new perspective on racism from the perpetuator not the victim.

    * One amazing journey through history and hearts

    * A great jumping off point for community conversations.

    * It is essential to be challenged.  This film opens doors to uncomfortable yet important truths.

 The discussion afterward was very interesting.  Many more of the questions were about my journey than were asked at the Mississippi screening - because of the seminar topic, "White Privilege".
